The Mommy Guilt Monster
Mommy guilt is absolutely everywhere when you are a new mom and it can drive us absolutely crazy sometimes if we let it.
Once you have a child you get bombarded with advice from all sorts of well-meaning people including friends, relatives, medical professionals, family groups, and even strangers at the supermarket. Sometimes it seems that having a little bundle of joy all wrapped up in a bucket car seat makes people think that you simply must need help.
A lot of that advice is tucked away for future reference, or even completely disregarded, but some of that advice can get into a new mommy’s head and give the new mom a lot of unnecessary mommy guilt which creeps out like a little monster that has been hiding under the bed and torments the new mom until it is all she can think about.
One example of this Mommy Guilt Monster’s emergence is with the ongoing debate over having a television on around your new baby. There are numerous studies that have been done on the long-term effects of letting your baby watch the television when they are under the age of two and even more recently articles were written about having the television on in the background and the horrible effects this may have on the development of your little one’s brain according to studies.
At some new mommy’s meeting the topic was brought up and one of the other new moms was fretting that she was destroying her sweet new baby boy by having the TV on for background noise when she was home alone with him during the day “oh my, he is going to get ADHD or something isn’t he?!” She exclaimed and the Mommy Guilt Monster made its way through the whole group as each of them admitted to having similar worries.
New mommies appreciate all the well-meaning people out there that want to help new moms, however, all this advice does seem to make new moms question everything that we are doing and it starts a chain reaction of worry which just feeds the little Monster of Mommy Guilt.
Right now, I want to give a bit of encouragement to the new mommy’s out there that are being tormented by this little monster – you are doing great! The very fact that you are being tormented by the ugly Mommy Guilt Monster shows that you are doing well! Let’s vanquish the evil little critter and try to stop worrying about all the little things. Let’s enjoy the moments we have with the precious little people that we have been blessed with.
Keep up the good work Mommy’s!
